GUATEMALA
AT A GLANCE

Guatemala’s population is nearly 18 million and has a population growth rate of 1.55%. The country has fully committed to fight against stunting, yet with 46% of the children under five stunted, it is not on track to meet its national stunting target. At the same time, efforts to decrease wasting have been fruitful, with 0.8% of children under five years affected, placing Guatemala below the average for Latin America. Nevertheless, persisting inequalities and an alarming rise in adult obesity, disproportionately affecting indigenous women, are leading to a rapid increase in non-communicable diseases. Recurrent natural disasters also exacerbate social and food vulnerabilities. Consequently, malnutrition is estimated to have cost Guatemala at least 11% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2018. Additionally, Guatemala is ranked 117 out of 192 countries in the UNDP HDR Gender Inequality Index 2023-2024.
