KENYA
AT A GLANCE

Kenya has a population of more than 55 million with a population growth ratio of 1.97%. Despite persistent poverty rates (39.8%), Kenya has made significant progress in reducing the prevalence of all forms of malnutrition. From over 40% in the mid-1990s, stunting has decreased to 17.6 % by 2022, while the wasting rate is 4.5% (2022). However, there are significant geographical and socio-demographic variations in stunting, wasting, and micronutrient deficiencies: the arid and semi-arid areas of northern, central, and eastern Kenya are the worst affected. These areas are particularly vulnerable to climate change, gender disparities, and poor infant feeding practices. Kenya is ranked 139th out of 192 countries in the UNDP HDR Gender Inequality Index 2023-2024.
