UGANDA
AT A GLANCE

Uganda’s population is 48.6 million with a population growth rate of 2.78%. The country plays a crucial role in regional security and hosts 1.6 million refugees, primarily women and children. Despite sustained economic growth and poverty reduction over the past 20 years, Uganda still faces chronic food and nutrition insecurity in certain areas. 25.4% of children under the age of five are stunted, and 3.6% are wasted. The most affected regions are the north (Karamoja and West Nile) and the southwest, where poorer households are disproportionately affected, and gender inequality remains high. The annual costs associated with child undernutrition are estimated to have equalled 5.6% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2013. Additionally, Uganda is ranked 138th out of 192 countries in the UNDP HDR Gender Inequality Index 2023-2024.
