ZAMBIA
AT A GLANCE

Zambia has a population of over 20.7 million, a population growth rate of 2.83%, and a growing economy driven by mining and construction. Although the national prevalence of stunting has considerably decreased over the past 25 years, it remains at 34.6%, which is higher than the average for the Africa region. Significant regional disparities persist; for instance, stunting and anaemia among women and children are much higher in northern areas and among low-income households, where dietary diversity and access to clean water and sanitation are limited. Additionally, malnutrition is exacerbated by inequitable gender roles within families. On a positive note, Zambia is on course to meet its target for reducing wasting, with 4.2% of children under five affected, which is lower than the regional average of 6.0%. Zambia is ranked 137th out of 192 countries in the UNDP HDR Gender Inequality Index 2023-2024.
