Over the past decade, nine countries across Africa, Asia and Central America have established NIPNs—nationally led platforms embedded within public institutions, including ministries and public health institutes. These platforms centralise, analyse and communicate data from multiple sectors (health, agriculture, social protection, water and sanitation, etc.) to inform strategic policy decisions and strengthen accountability in addressing all forms of malnutrition.
Co-organised by C4N-NIPN Global Coordination, the European Commission (EC) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the event will feature a presentation highlighting NIPN’s main achievements. Several discussions will then explore how the NIPN multisectoral and data-driven approach has contributed to strengthening national nutrition policies and programming while improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of public interventions. Speakers will include representatives from government institutions in Anglophone and Francophone African countries, as well as international partners, members of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, and Nutrition for Growth (N4G) pledgers.
The discussions will address three guiding questions:
- How has NIPN contributed to strengthening national nutrition policy and programming?
- How has integrated data analysis improved the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of interventions?
- What conditions are needed to ensure long-term sustainability and resilience of food and nutrition systems?
As the second phase of NIPN progresses in its final year, this year’s Global Gathering adopts the timely theme, “Reflecting on Progress to Sustain Nutrition Impact”. The 7th Global Gathering offers an opportunity for collective and strategic dialogue with partners, donors, and technical institutions. This year’s event will serve as a juncture to reflect on NIPN’s role in advancing accountability.
The sustainability of NIPN will be a cornerstone of the event. Discussions will focus on sharing best practices and approaches for embedding NIPN processes, products, and activities, instilling the NIPN approach to further national priorities when resources are constrained.
The Global Gathering will take place 23-26 September in Lusaka, Zambia.

In Addis Ababa, on 21 October, a joint NIPN and EC-NIS high-level event titled ‘When data works: A call to invest in nutrition information systems at the N4G Paris 2025′ was held. The event highlighted the upcoming N4G Paris summit as a pivotal opportunity to establish the nutrition information systems needed to improve nutrition outcomes. The event started with a video from France’s Special Envoy to Paris 2025 N4G, Brieuc Pont, who called for increased investment in nutrition in general and in information systems in particular.

More InformationThe panel discussion featured:
- Afshan Khan, SUN Movement Coordinator
- Roberto Schiliro, Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation in Ethiopia
- Sisay Sinamo, Director of Programs, Sequota Declaration and SUN Coordinator Ethiopia.
The discussion reinforced the importance of sustained collaboration and investment to strengthen systems that support evidence-based decision-making in nutrition.
The event concluded with remarks from Laura Barrington, who highlighted the critical importance of investing in data and information systems to enable evidence-based decision-making and accountability for nutrition. She emphasized that scaling up nutrition interventions offers immense economic benefits, citing a $23 return on every $1 invested, while the cost of inaction remains high. Laura also commended Ethiopia’s progress on its dashboards, capacity building, and the UNISE platform, which demonstrates how robust systems can drive impact.
As we approach the N4G Paris 2025, Laura underscored the need to build on the momentum established at N4G Tokyo and called for a stronger commitment to allocating at least 5% of total nutrition funding to strengthening data systems. Her closing message was clear: data works for nutrition when investments are made.
